Temple Strollin’

Samgwangsa Temple is a huge Buddhist temple in the hills just outside of Seomyeon. The temple is famous for its huge lantern display every year on Buddha’s birthday, and attracts tourists from all over the country.
I’m still kicking myself for missing the lanterns this year.
My friend Sara and I decided to head to the temple on foot directly after work so we could get in as much time as possible before the sun went down. The walk takes about 30 minutes from Minam station, but it took us a little longer due to us hopping on a random bus when we should’ve just walked.
Why be patient and figure out a bus route when you can just jump on a bus that’s going vaguely in the direction you’re trying to go?
As the youths say, you only live once.

The temple itself is relatively young and was built in 1983, but that doesn’t take away from the authentic feel. It’s surrounded by beautiful pine trees and has an adorable resting area with a pond. It’s perfect for an afternoon outing with friends.

Getting there:

The quickest option is to take a taxi straight to the temple. This is probably your best bet if you have problems with inclines, because the temple itself is situated at the top of a pretty steep hill. Another option would be to hop on a bus bound for Seongyeong apartments. Bus numbers 44, 63, 81, 83-1, 103, 112, 133, or 201 will get you there. Bus 15 from Seomyeon runs about every 10 minutes taking people to and from the temple.
